HOW MY SKIN CARE ROUTINE IS CONNECTED TO MY HAIR CARE ROUTINE

OK so maybe this isn’t new to anybody but I was a week a go years old when it dawned on me that certain parts of my skincare routine mirrors my hair care routine from the products to the beneficial techniques-it’s literally the same.

Again maybe this a captain obvious moment but honestly just take a minute and think about your skincare routine and how identical your products and techniques may be..

ROSEWATER

For example Rosewater is a product that we rave about for our hair. If you stretch your relaxers, rose water is going to be your best friend when it comes to softening and de tangling new growth.

But I also spray this on my face mainly during summer months as sort of a refresher, and sometimes I’ll spray some on my face after the shower. I don’t really notice any other

benefits besides the cooling sensation for my face. I don’t experience a lot of redness on my face and I know rose water is great for that as well.

COCONUT OIL

Up next is coconut oil. Coconut oil is hit or miss for some people but I love it for my hair. It can be used in so many ways and I personally will mix it with a hair butter if my hair is super dry or I will add it to my pre poo routine or mix it in with other ingredients for a hair mask. As far as my skin routine concerned, I don’t usually slather coconut oil on my face

However I do use it to take off makeup, specifically eye make up and stubborn Mascara.

VITAMIN E

Vitamin E is a vitamin you need if your are experiencing any type of breakage or damage. It can be used in a hot oil treatment or an overnight pre poo treatment if your hair really need some repair.

I then use the vitamin E capsules for my dark marks. I just puncture a capsule and use the oil from that as a spot treatment. Vitamin E oil from the capsule is the most potent which is why use it, however it is heavy and could potentially clog your pores. So if you have sensitive skin, I wouldn’t try this.

ALOE VERA

So yall know we love aloe Vera and can attest to how good it is. There so many hair products you can make with aloe Vera. again, videos will be down below, but I like to use the aloe vera gel or juice and mix it with rose water to soften my new growth. I also like to add the gel in with jojoba oil or jbco to sometimes treat my itchy scalp.

And then I use the aloe vera leaf and cut it into cubes and rub that on my face to help with inflammation only during breakoutsso I don’t do this all the time

SHEA BUTTER

Ok so up next is Shea butter and I feel like a lot of people use Shea butter as a universal product for hair and skin.. shea butter is something we use for those extreme dry hair days. I actually don’t have any right now but I’m going to try to find some that’s whipped because I feel like it will be easier to use for hair and skin, but I’m not opposed to raw Shea butter.. Just like I use shea butter for extreme dry hair.

I also like using she a butter for my extreme ashy days aka cold weather days. Shea butter is good for lightening dark marks as well since it does contain vitamin E and I use to have a she a butter stick that I used for that but I can’t find it so I need to go on Etsy and one but those things are perfect for spot treatment.

STEAMING

Ok so we mentioned products now we’re going to move on to the techniques. first up is steaming and yall know how much we talk about hair steaming benefits. We got into steaming a couple years ago when we started going to head spas. We love getting our hair steamed because it opens up your hair to soak up the product’s benefit and it just feels so amazing.

My 2021 wish list includes getting a hair steamer. I do have a facial steamer and that is a game changer as well. I got it for Christmas and I absolutely love it.. Like hair steaming, it opens up your pores to prep your face for whatever product you’re about to put on it. I also like to steam with a face mask in for 20 minutes.

MASKS

Speaking of masks face masks and hair mask are pretty much essential for my life and hopefully yours. I always do a hair mask when I wash my hair for deep conditioning purposes and I use a face mask for kind of the same thing I guess you can say I’m deep conditioning my face especially when I use a moisture face mask but I also use masks to unclog my

pores and shrink breakouts.

EXFOLIATION

Next technique is exfoliation. I do like to get my scalp exfoliated every once in a while especially

if it’s loaded with product. I know Lesia uses a Mizani product called Mizani scalp care exfoliating pre treatment which basically clears out any oils or heavy products in order to prep it for the rest of the wash day.

I don’t do this often just like I don’t do facial ex foliations often. I exfoliate my face to get rid of dead skin cells so new skin can start coming through. It’s good for speeding up the process of getting rid of dark marks so I should probably start doing it more often since I do have a few marks I’m trying to fade.

SPF

Photo by Lina Verovaya on Unsplash

Ok so SPF! Need I say more? A lot of people don’t use SPF for their hair but I feel like it’s

essential especially in the thick of summer.. Extreme UV exposure can cause your hair to fade if you have color treated hair and it can also dry out your hair. I use an oil mist from Og X that has SPF in it and it’s good for color treated hair as well.

I don’t need to say too much about SPF because yes black people need SPF too even in colder months. If you have hyper pigmentation you definitely need Spf because the sun can make you dark spots darker

SUPPLEMENTS

And lastly supplements. I’ve seen a huge difference in the texture of my skin and also the health

of my hair when I use collagen. We use Collagen for Her specifically the one in the blue

tub which is the beauty blend. That one has biotin in it which benefits our hair a lot.
